We have a web host account that allows us to host a number of Web Sites at a reasonable cost. The costs are borne by Ramblers Central Office. The account is run by Ramblers volunteers, claiming the costs back from CO.

Each web site is edited by one or more people (Webmasters) who can have whatever access they require to their domain.

A small group of volunteers act as overall Administrators.

Features

We can host a variety of types of web site and also email accounts.

Web Sites

Web sites normally have a domain name of the form xxxxramblers.org.uk, e.g. www.derbyramblers.org.uk

The .org implies that we are not a commercial organisation.

Sites can use various levels of technology which is up to the webmaster or administrators to define, the common ones are

  • straight HTML authored site, either created by a text editor or software such as Frontpage, Dreamweaver
  • a Content Management System (CMS) such as Joomla

In addition to your normal www.xxxramblers.org.uk web site you can have secondary web sites for specific functions

  • e.g. nextwalksprogramme.xxxxramblers.org.uk - to allow your walks leaders to see how your next walks programme is developing.

Email

Email accounts can have a number of emails set up, these can

  • Forward emails to other email accounts
  • have Mailboxes that can be accessed via email client software such as Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express etc, or via a web browser

Experience

One of the aims of this site is to be store of knowledge on how to do things regarding setting up your web site. If you become a webmaster or administrator within this community then you are encouraged to contribute information that can help others. See How to

SQL Databases
