Naisminth's Rule for gpx display was created by Michael Kohnstamm
Our group is on a project to update our walk routes, which are displayed using the standard Joomla Ramblers-Webs gpx file display. Out walks are short countryside routes to encourage non-walkers to start walking. I've had complaints that the estimated times are quite unrealistic. They appear to be based on Naismith's rule, which was designed for mountaineers in Scottish hills, not beginners crossing muddy fields with stiles.
I noted the OS are looking to improve on Naismith and circulated an article at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/newsroom/blog/w...sting-naismiths-rule . This was returned to me with the quote :"Being overdue or stuck out after dark (‘benighted’) still accounts for a sizable number of incidents each year, and a more accurate route time estimation could help reduce this risk."
Can anything be done to make the display clear that short local routes may take beginners up to twice as long to complete as the estimated time suggests? In the meantime I will just add my own disclaimer, with a more accurate time.
