I’m setting up a members area on the Joomla 3 website I’m developing – new.surreyramblers.org.uk. There is a single login that everyone uses rather than individual passwords.

I don’t much like the standard login module as it takes up so much space, so my plan was to have a “Login” Menu item with access level set to “Guest”, and a “Logout” menu item with access level set to “Registered”. After login, the Login button in the main menu should be replaced by a Logout button, and a separate Members menu should appear.

Unfortunately this doesn’t work. The menu items do not change on login or logout. The “Login” button remains in place after a user has logged in, and clicking it gives an error message since registered users can’t access content set to “Guest”.

I’ve found that the only way to fix this is to turn off caching in global configuration. I’ve tried both conservative and progressive, and also turning off caching in the Main Menu module settings, but nothing fixes it except globally turning off caching.

I have something similar working perfectly in version 2.5, even with global and module caching turned on. I’ve looked in Joomla forums and this seems to have been a problem even back to v1.5. Most frustrating!
